5 Attainable Classics at Bonhams’ Goodwood Members’ Sale

Bonhams Cars

I’m seeing article after article — some written by yours truly — on the rising values of cars from the 80s, 90s and 2000s and the decline in popularity of classics from the 1960s. I’m certain that there is excitement and buzz around these newer collectibles thanks to some impressively high sales prices, but 60s classics are far from dead, especially those with more affordable prices. In this week’s Market Monday, I’m featuring 5 attainable classics at Bonhams’ Goodwood Members’ Sale.

Goodwood Member’s Meeting

Goodwood

Revived in 2014 as the modern continuation of Goodwood’s original postwar club races, the Goodwood Members’ Meeting is an intentionally intimate, access-all-areas motorsport weekend that recreates the camaraderie and competitive spirit of the British Automobile Racing Club gatherings held at the circuit from 1948 to 1966, but with a broader mix of historic machinery, demonstrations, and member-focused festivities. Unlike the larger, more theatrical Revival, the event emphasizes close access to cars, drivers, and paddocks, along with a relaxed, club-like atmosphere limited primarily to members of the Goodwood Road Racing Club.

The upcoming 83rd Members’ Meeting, scheduled for April 18–19, 2026, continues this philosophy with a race program run on sustainable fuels and themed tributes marking the 50th anniversary of James Hunt’s 1976 Formula One title and Barry Sheene’s championship success, alongside historic touring car shootouts, Formula One demonstrations, and the event’s first dedicated showcase of Grand Prix motorcycles.

About Bonhams Goodwood Members’ Auction

The partnership between Bonhams Cars and the Goodwood Estate has endured for 30 years and both the Spring and Fall sales are a highlight of their annual auction calendar. This year’s sale includes the usual stellar assortment of cars spanning various eras as well as a few cars from the estate of automotive artist Michael Turner.

A total of 78 vehicle lots have been consigned for Bonhams Cars Goodwood Members’ Meeting Auction taking place on April 19, 2026. Last year’s sale featured 84 lots of a similar composition of race cars, classics, pre-war cars, RAD-era collectibles and more. In 2025, Bonhams’ sell through rate was a solid 73%, with the top sale going to a 1967 Ferrari 330 GTC that sold for £402,500. This year, the most expensive car could be a 1939 Jaguar SS100, a 2002 Lamborghini Murcielago or even a 2000 Porsche 996 GT3R RSR race car. It’s worth noting that most of the cars at the Goodwood auctions are right hand drive — handy if you’re in Britain, but not so desirable elsewhere.

5 Classics at Bonhams Goodwood Members’ Sale

There are plenty of desirable cars on offer at this Spring’s Goodwood sale, but most of them are right-hand drive. Selfishly, if a car with its steering wheel on the correct (left) side is available elsewhere, the British version holds little interest. If that car happens to be of English origin, however, I am more flexible.

The Jensen CV-8 is a rare car with only 499 constructed between 1962 and 1966. Featuring a fiberglass and aluminum body with a big block Chrysler V8 engine, the car is a cool blend of European styling and American muscle. Only two convertibles were ever built by the factory — making this a custom one-off, but the work appears to be beautifully done. The car’s lines with the top up are especially attractive. It’s estimated at a reasonable $40,000-67,000.

A genuine race car with a provenance of competition in various British circuits, this BJR 500 looks like an affordable way to participate in classic racing events. Built for a ½ liter displacement class of racing, the car features a JAP motorcycle engine that was recently rebuilt after a failure on track. The car remains eligible for racing and is estimated at $27,000-34,000 — a pretty affordable sum for such a cool looking little racer and the opportunity to participate in exclusive events.

There are few cars more iconic than a Mini Cooper. If there were one I’d want, it’s an external-hinge variant in fully restored condition with red paint and a black roof just like this one. The restoration is fresh, and it looks it. The custom touches are very nice, with a gorgeous Les Leston wood steering wheel, Cooper S brakes and chrome wheels. I’ve always loved the sliding side windows on the early cars. The average price of a Mk 1 Morris Mini Cooper is $27,000, making this car’s estimate of $24,000-35,000 pretty conservative.

Having spent a fair bit of time last year driving clients’ Land Rovers, I have developed an appreciation for Series Land Rovers and Defenders. These were often used as emergency and military vehicles thanks to their durability and carrying capacity. This 1954 Land Rover Series 1 fire tender has to be one of the earliest examples extant, and may have a history with the RAF. Restored with a full suite of fire equipment including hoses, pumps, and lighting this vintage fire vehicle is estimated to sell between $20,000 and $27,000.

Owning a genuine Formula car, even F3, would be a dream. If you’re not a current vintage racer, you’ll have a long hill to climb before you drive this British-built racer in competitive vintage or exhibition events, but that would be part of the fun. This one has a history of winning such competitive historic races, including 2nd overall in the Historic Formula 3 Championship. Estimated at $47,000-61,000, this could be an affordable way to start an expensive hobby.

Final Thoughts

Of the cars above, the most unique is probably the 1964 Jensen CV-8 Mark II Convertible. It’s not an original drop-top and the chassis has been significantly shortened relative to the standard CV-8, but I personally find the car’s new proportions a bit more appealing. The 2+2 configuration of the original car always felt a little bloated to me. This particular car was apparently won by the consignor in a charity raffle in the UK in 2025, but is too short of stature to reach the pedals.

Even though I’m on a rarity kick, the 1966 Morris Mini Cooper Mk1 would be the car I’d want to take home. The restoration is impeccably done and the details are tastefully added.
