The 911 is perhaps the most famous sports car in the world. Its elegant shape combined with the proven and successful air-cooled, rear-mounted flat-six engine has captivated motoring enthusiasts for decades.

This Porsche 911 SC on offer from Wolf and Mare is a 1981 model from the middle years of production for the SC generation and features an extensive Virginia ownership history. Available records place this Porsche 911 SC in Massachusetts in the 90s before spending a couple of years in South Carolina in 2000.

For the past 22 years, the car has been driven and enjoyed in Richmond, Virginia. Wolf and Mare is representing the current owner who is selling the car with a clean Virginia title.

Launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1963, the Porsche 901 was designed to replace the aging Porsche 356 (also known as “the first Porsche,” and one of Wolf and Mare’s favorite cars). The 911 was an instant hit with attendees, which encouraged the factory to move the car into production with haste.

After nearly 2 decades of evolution for the model, examples of which include iconic variants such as the 1967 911R, 1972 Carrera RS, 1973 Carrera RSR, 1975 930 Turbo and more, Porsche released the Porsche 911SC in 1978.

With a more powerful engine, the 911 SC built on improvements made with the introduction of the G-series in 1973 including raised bumpers to meet US crash standards, high-back seating with integrated headrests, black trim instead of chrome, and updated aluminum and magnesium rear suspension arms to reduce weight.

Finished in silver paint over a black interior, this 911 SC is powered by a correct “Super Carrera” 3.0 Liter engine delivering 180 horsepower. The gearbox is the stock 5-speed 915 transmission introduced in 1972 and used through 1986. During a road test, the car shifted well and the engine pulled hard through all gears. The car appears to have originally been delivered with factory air conditioning, but service records indicate the A/C components were removed in 2007.

Visual inspection suggests the engine has the desirable Carrera pressure-fed cam tensioner upgrade as well as an upgraded external oil cooler in the front passenger wheel well. The catalytic converter has been deleted. A leak-down test was performed in 2015 and noted a slight leak in the #6 cylinder while the remaining cylinders were fairly even at 0-4%.

While missing the paint code sticker from the usual locations, we believe the car’s color to be Tin Metallic, or “Zinnmetallic” in German, a rarer color from G Series 911 production based on information on the Porsche Club of America’s Rennbow app. Interior surfaces of the trunk, engine bay and door jambs appear to retain their original silver color.

The car has had several exterior panels repainted over its 40 years of life, and wears evidence of prior owners’ enjoyment with various areas of paint touch-up, road rash on the front valance and a few chips here and there. Exterior features include fog lamps below the front bumper, European-style head and tail light lenses, and a sunroof.

The clearcoat shines to a good gloss, but subsurface paint flaws are visible at certain angles and the front fenders have been rolled by a previous owner, resulting in cracked paint on the fender lips. The trim rings surrounding the headlights have been painted with Plasti Dip.

Like older models, the Porsche 911 SC utilized a MacPherson strut and torsion bar front suspension with a semi-trailing arm rear suspension that replaced the ancient and Beetle-derived swing-arms used on the 356. The 911SC is also equipped with both front and rear anti-roll bars to provide more stable handling, reducing the chances you’ll suddenly find yourself facing the opposite direction on a sharp bend.

Braking is handled by hydraulically assisted discs on all four corners. The soft brake lines were recently replaced with stainless steel braided hoses. The car’s brake rotors and pads have good life remaining and the car stops well with a solid pedal.

This 911 SC rolls on 16” Fuchs wheels with black centers and anodized lips. There is some aging of the finish but no evidence of curb rash on any of the four wheels. The car retains its factory space-saving spare wheel and tire in the front trunk. New tires were fitted at the time the current owner acquired the car and show 2020 date codes with good tread remaining.

The interior presents well with visible patina on the leather seating surfaces of the driver and passenger seats. The headliner is separating in some areas near the sunroof opening with some staining toward the rear of the car. The dashboard is in very nice condition and has been fitted with a Continental Bluetooth stereo powering a set of aftermarket rear shelf and door speakers.

The distinctive 5-in-a-row gauges are fully functional with clear lenses and bright orange needles. A mechanical odometer displays approximately 127,000 miles, though this will increase slightly during sale as the car is regularly enjoyed. A leather-wrapped MOMO Monte Carlo steering wheel replaces the factory three-spoke wheel, which is included with the sale. The center console has been removed, providing additional leg space and a more vintage feel to the interior.

Service records dating back to 2007 and up to 2023 are included and show various repairs and upgrades over the years including a transmission rebuild with a new clutch, short shifter and bushings in 2007. The fuse panel and fuel pump were swapped for new units in 2015. Several pre-purchase inspection reports document the car’s condition at various points in history.

With its desirable upgrades and recent maintenance, this Porsche 911 SC is an honest example that can be driven and thoroughly enjoyed as it sits or utilized as a solid base for restoration over time.

If you’re looking for an air-cooled 911 that is ready for carefree long-distance touring and spirited blasts through the countryside, this Porsche 911 SC on offer is a terrific opportunity to join the club!
