Bonhams Cars

Barry Taylor’s collection of over 400 lots of pre-merger AMG parts and spares plus more than 20 collector cars is being offered at no reserve by Bonhams Cars this week. Part 1 of the online auction, called AMG Rediscovered, is scheduled to end today, so bid now! Below you’ll find a few of the cars we’re watching plus a brief preview of Bonhams’ other car auction this week.

As you know, we love rarity and an AMG-tuned w123 estate car is rare indeed. AMG dropped the V8 from the S-class into this mid-sized wagon chassis, creating a potent yet practical Merc. Bonus points: the car was built the year I was born. Extra points for being silver over red, one of my favorite combinations on a German car. Bid to $46,000 at the time of writing, this car should bring some big money.

Update: This Mercedes-Benz 500 TE AMG Estate sold for $138,000, a tidy sum but a touch less than the low end of the estimate of $150,000.

This saloon, a w126 example, certainly looks aggressively cool in its AMG front air dam, sill extensions, rear apron and Penta wheels. Power from the 3.8 liter V8 and painted in a gorgeous color of Lapis Blue over beige, this sexy sedan currently sits at just $8,500 with an estimate of $25-30,000 USD.

Update: This mean little Merc hammered sold for a mere $14,950. A fantastic bargain, in my opinion.

Here’s a w107 Mercedes coupe that certainly stands out among the typical offering! A fixed roof version of the SL of the period, this one has been lavished with an AMG body styling package plus the mighty 6.9 liter V8 from the big 450 SEL. Last but not least: it has 3 pedals. Estimated at just $45-60,000 USD, we are in no way surprised this has already been bid to $80,000 at the time of writing.

Update: This 450SLC must be a new benchmark high, selling for $345,000!

My current mild obsession with the boxy, utilitarian and oh-so-1980s Mercedes 190E has not abated much in the last couple of months. With hot varieties of these cars bringing big money, this AMG-styled car could be a relative bargain. It certainly looks the part with a plethora of AMG parts including bodywork, bumpers, spoiler and Penta wheels. It’ll need some reconditioning, but would be a hit at any car meet or Mercedes show. The car is currently bid to $17,000 against an estimate of $25-35,000 USD but I expect this sexy 190E will at least reach the guided value.

Update: This “Wide Body” 190E went well beyond my means, selling for a staggering $43,700. That is well above the house estimate, but we can’t blame the bidders on this one. It’s a gorgeous car.

If you miss out on any of the no reserve beauties from today’s AMG Rediscovered sale, turn your attention to Bonhams Cars Bonmont Sale, which ends this Sunday, June 30. Included in this sale are number of impressive cars being sold at no reserve, such as a 1974 Lamborghini Urraco P300 and a 1970 Aston Martin DB6 Mk2 Vantage. If you like supercars, how about a gorgeous Mauvine Metallic 2015 McLaren P1?

In next week’s Market Monday, we’ll highlight some of the interesting sales from these two auctions. In the meantime, have a great week everyone.
