Going Dutch: 1990 Porsche 911 Targa Police

Today’s Good Find Friday will be a bit of a quickie, as I am currently writing from Amelia Island Concours Week and time is rather short due to the plethora of car-related events. Dream cars for pretty much every taste can be found on show fields, auction tents or parking lots all over the island. I’ve yet to see one of my holy grail cars in the flesh: a Rijkspolitie Porsche 911.

The Dutch Rijkspolitie, the national police force responsible for highway patrol, famously used Porsche cars from the 1960s to the 1990s. Seeking high-performance vehicles capable of keeping up with fast-moving traffic on the Netherlands’ expanding highway network, they opted for Porsche models such as the 356, 911, and 914.

These cars were chosen for their superior speed, handling, and reliability, allowing officers to efficiently enforce traffic laws and respond quickly to incidents. The open-top Targa versions of the 911 were particularly favored, as they provided better visibility and communication with motorists.

The Rijkspolitie’s white-and-orange Porsches became iconic symbols of Dutch road policing. Officers, dressed in white uniforms for high visibility, patrolled the highways in these distinctive cars, often engaging in public-friendly policing rather than aggressive enforcement.
However, by the 1990s, the need for more practical and cost-effective vehicles led to the gradual replacement of Porsches with more conventional patrol cars. Despite their retirement, these Porsche police cars remain celebrated in automotive history, with some preserved in museums and private collections.

Today’s find is a genuine, though retired, Rijkspolitie Porsche 911 currently offered for sale by the selling dealer in Germany.

Said to be restored by the selling dealer’s shop, this 911 is finished in white with the Dutch Police force’s signature (at the time) orange safety colors. The exterior appears to be in very nice condition, and even includes the tire pressure ratings at the top of the fenders. The other most notable feature, of course, is the rotating beacon mounted to the Targa bar with a custom bracket.

The black interior shows some wear on the seats, but is otherwise in good shape. A Porsche Classic Radio has been added to the dash to provide modern functions like navigation and wireless communication. Just below can be seen the police equipment used to activate the warning sirens, light, and public address system.

The engine of the Rijkspolitie Porsche 911 is a 3.6 Liter flat six putting out around 250 horsepower, which should have been quite adequate in policing Dutch roadways or rushing organs to the hospital for transplant patients in need.
Final Thoughts
My obsession with European police cars will eventually result in some kind of interesting overseas acquisition but sadly, it will probably never be one of these ultimate emergency Porsches. Not too many of these cars remain, and those that do command healthy prices when they hit the market. This particular car’s price is available on application, but a similar Porsche 911 Targa Police is currently for sale by Zweck with an asking price of $199,964.
If you’re building a serious Porsche collection, however, I strongly recommend you consider adding one of these to your roster. Nothing will capture attention like a genuine Porsche 911 Targa Police Car.
