Is the Mk2 Volkswagen GTI on the Rise?

Bring A Trailer

Yesterday, on a quiet Sunday a 1992 Volkswagen GTI sold on Bring A Trailer for $56,000.
Owners of Mk2 GTIs are certain to be elated, while others will say that everyone (including yours truly—I own a 1992 GTI) now thinks their GTI is worth mid-5 figures. In this week’s Market Monday, I’ll dive into this result to answer whether the Mk2 Volkswagen GTI is on the rise.

The second generation Volkswagen GTI, known as the Mk2, was produced from 1984 to 1992. It featured a larger body than the previous generation, improved aerodynamics, and a 1.8-liter inline-four engine producing around 110 horsepower. The introduction of the 16-valve engine in 1985, producing 139 horsepower, significantly enhanced its performance. Technological advancements like anti-lock brakes and power steering, along with interior upgrades, made the Mk2 more practical and comfortable.

Despite facing competition from various other manufacturers, the Mk2 GTI maintained its popularity due to its balanced performance, practicality, and iconic status. It appealed to a wide range of drivers, from young enthusiasts to those seeking a fun yet reliable daily driver. The Mk2’s legacy is reflected in the continued admiration from car enthusiasts and collectors.

Until recently, the Mk1 VW GTI, especially early examples from 1975 and on have commanded the highest prices for early watercooled VWs. Is the Mk2 finally getting the respect it deserves?

The Auction

Let’s take a look at this particular 1992 Volkswagen GTI 16v and look at the car itself as well as how the auction was conducted for insight into why it generated so much bidding excitement.

Condition Matters

Our mantra around here at Wolf and Mare is Condition Matters. As appraisers, it’s one of the most critical factors in determining value. Condition—especially in the collector car world—is very important to buyers, which is why it’s so important to us.

This Mk2 Volkswagen GTI sold by Bring A Trailer was an example of a car whose condition could be called “very good.” There are some visible flaws, but to the average passerby they likely wouldn’t be noticed. So: good but not great, so how did this car do so well?

Bring A Trailer

First, it was a low mileage car. 88,000 miles may not sound low, but in the world of 30-year old economy cars it’s unusual. Second, the car has only 2 owners in its history, meaning you’d be the third owner in 3 decades. Third, this is the desirable 16 valve engine—which is legendary among VW fans—and the car boasts other desirable features such as air conditioning, sunroof and BBS wheels.

It’s simply not easy to find a low-miles, unmolested Mk2 Volkswagen GTI in very good condition, so scarcity works in this car’s favor.

Presentation is Key

The best sellers on Bring A Trailer know how to prepare a listing to show a car in the best light, but also disclose the true condition of a car. The latter is critical to inspiring confidence in your bidders.

Great photography that includes “beauty shots” showing the shine of the paint, the straightness of the body panels, and the overall presence of the car draw buyers in. Views of the car from every angle, including the undercarriage and interior leave no questions as to what might be lurking in a dark corner. This listing in particular had over 400 photographs documenting the car.

Videos are highly effective at conveying the full emotion and experience of a vehicle. An overview of the car to give an impression of what it’s like in person, plus a driving and cold start video are almost essential. This auction included videos showing the functionality of the air conditioning, lighting, sunroof and details of the undercarriage.

The seller of this GTI went the extra mile to leave no stone unturned for bidders.

Seller Engagement

Bring A Trailer

The responsiveness and volume of participation in conversation is highly influential in the success of a Bring A Trailer auction, as we’ve written before. The community on Bring A Trailer can seem nit-picky at best and hostile at worst, but the seller, Dpiagg, answered questions from commenters quickly and with respect.

When additional photos or details were needed, the seller was added them without haste to address concerns. Additionally, each of Dpiagg’s comments showed enthusiasm for the car and provided interesting history or facts about this particular GTI that would be of interest to bidders.

The Result

We’ve established that the car was special, so what does that mean for the rest of the market? Before I share my conclusions, let’s get nerdy.

Bring A Trailer

Sales like this are called “outliers” in the industry (or in statistics if you’re into that kind of thing). Simply put, an outlier is a sale that significantly deviates from the typical or median sales price for a particular vehicle at a particular point in time. When compared to other cars in a similar marketplace, they are either unusually high or low.

This GTI represents the second-highest sale price of a Mk2 GTI in the last 5 years. That sale was back in 2023 and was another 1992 VW GTI 16v sold on Bring A Trailer. The final price for that vehicle was $86,000. Currently, the market average price of a Mk2 GTI (any variant) is about $15,500.

Using an outlier to set prices has a number of pitfalls. First, market trends are determined by a statistically valid set of transactions, and a single sale cannot represent the direction of an entire market. Pricing a vehicle higher than the market average (assuming the vehicle is average) can give a false impression of what buyers and sellers can expect for a particular car. It’s the literal manifestation of the fears raised by a few of the post-hammer commenters on this listing.

Second, outliers are by nature exceptional sales. This makes it difficult to find comparables to the subject vehicle. Low-miles, very good condition 1992 Volkswagen GTI 16vs do not come to market often, so it is difficult to assign a value. In the last 5 years, there have been only 4 Mk2 Volkswagen GTIs sold for more than $40,000 and each was unique. That’s why it’s important to work with an appraiser to determine the true market value of your vehicle.

Lastly, results for outliers are inconsistent, especially in an auction scenario. Emotions can overcome a bidder who feels they just have to have it, which can lead to less rational decisions. Conversely, a poor presentation or an auction that runs on the wrong day (like a holiday) can depress bidding and generate a no-sale or worse.

Conclusion

No, not all GTIs—not even mine—are $50,000 cars as a result of this sale. As noted above, condition and specification are the most influential, yet most widely varying factors. A qualified appraiser, such as Wolf and Mare, considers the condition and specification of the subject vehicle when determining its value.

That said, based on data from Hagerty, the second-generation Volkswagen GTI benefited more from the pandemic rise than many other cars. Values over the previous 5 years rose about 170%, whereas some cars such as impact bumper 911s, “only” rose 40-50% for the same period. The “average” price of a Mk2 VW GTI in 2019 was $5,500. Over the last year, however, values have paced the market and softened by 10% for GTI’s in average condition.

For a certain generation, the Mk2 VW GTI 16v is a true icon. As those enthusiasts approach collecting age, they may want to finally have the hot hatch of their dreams. With so many early water-cooled Volkswagens rusting into oblivion or suffering from neglect, good condition cars aren’t getting any easier to find. Scarcity and demand can only drive prices one direction—up, but it may be a while before we see a big value jump like we did during the pandemic years.

As always, we advise enthusiasts to purchase a car they love in the best condition they can afford. Have a great week, everyone.
