Porsche Purity: The White Collection Sale Continues

The White Collection was a low-key, if not underground, collection of around 65 Porsches visited by the Porsche Club of America back in 2018. As its name would suggest, the entire collection featured examples of Porsche’s most iconic models—all in white.

Porsche cognoscenti and enthusiasts typically had a love or hate reaction to this ostentatious yet simultaneously one-note demonstration of high-end hoarding. Many felt that squirreling away so many desirable and enjoyable driver’s machines was an affront to Ferry’s Porsche’s intentions that their cars be driven, not polished.

Others were envious of the well-optioned and rare models on display that spanned so many decades of Porsche history. “Exhibits” included a Porsche 356A Carrera 1600, 1994 911 Turbo S Flachbau and a 991 GT2 RS with a ridiculous number of exclusive options.

We say “included” because the entire collection was liquidated in December of 2023 by RM Sotheby’s. Besides motor vehicles, the owner collected a mountain of memorabilia and parts. Apparently, the collection was so massive, it took the specialists at RM another few months to photograph and catalog it all, as the remainder of the collection will be auctioned off in April.

If you happened to miss out on the auction that saw the highest ever price paid for a 991 GT2 RS, now you have another chance to get a piece of this newsworthy collection.

As lovers of early Porsche and all things weird and quirky, here’s what we would love to acquire for our own shelves:

While Porsche’s flat-four from the 60s is a remarkably reliable and stout engine, given they’re not making any more of them retaining a complete spare seems prudent to us. Bonus: 356 engines make a lovely shop display when they’re fully restored. The auction lists this as a Porsche 356 SC engine, which is verified by the third piece stamping. However, the carburetors, fuel pump, oil filler and other telltales on the engine are not SC-spec. Its hodge-podge build means we may get it for cheap.

Our affection for the Porsche 356 has led to a decade of ownership and a professional specialization in the model. These beautiful posters combine our love for these cars with our affinity for graphic design from the middle of the 20th century.

If you know the world of the first Porsche well, you know these bench seats were a rarely selected option for the 356. Seeing one at a car show is worthy of exclamation, but we can’t imagine they’re the most practical thing. We’d love to build a base for this and have it in our office.

RM Sotheby’s

Since it’s highly unlikely we’ll ever own a Porsche 959 ourselves, and their owners are probably reliant on the skills of the mechanically inclined, our possession of this manual could increase our chances of setting our hands on one of these incredible machines.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Purple Patlite trend in the Japanese auto enthusiast world, don’t feel bad. Neither were we until we spied these in RM Sotheby’s White Collection Auction. Now we want the whole bundle. Somehow we think this could play well lighting up our 356 at Cars & Coffee.

Bidding Ends April 9, 2024

We Porsche enthusiasts have 20 days to peruse the lots and get our finances together to bid on some of these delectable leftovers, which is good because there are almost 2,000 lots to sift through.
