Amelia Island Concours 2019

For the 28th year, Amelia Island Concours Week will be held in Fernandina Beach, Florida in 2024. This year marks the first year Wolf and Mare will be in attendance as members of the collector car industry rather than simply excited spectators, and we’re stoked!

Amelia Island Concours Week can be a bewildering experience if it’s your first time. Since Wolf and Mare’s primary mission is to help the community better enjoy the collector car hobby, we thought we’d share the tips and tricks we’ve learned with all of you.

Amelia Island Concours Week: Feb 29 – Mar 3, 2024

The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance was founded by Bill Warner of Road & Track fame way back in 1996. More than a profit-seeking or niche car community gathering, the event is a charitable one that benefits the Community Hospice of Northeast Florida. Over the years it has gained a reputation as one of the premier concours in the world, among such notable events at the Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach and the Louis Vuitton Classic in Manhattan.

As the concours has gained notoriety and respect over the years for the exceptional vehicles that are invited and the notable guests that are honored there, many other events and activities have sprung up around the main event such as auctions, smaller special interest shows, parties and more. As much a social event as a high-end car exhibition, this small town in northeast Florida positively buzzes with activity during show week.

The Amelia Island Concours is typically held the second weekend in March, but will run from February 29th to March 3d in 2024. We hope our guide below will help you plan an amazing visit to Amelia Island whether traveling alone, with friends or family.

Car Shows | Amelia Island Concours Week

In 2021 Hagerty Insurance purchased the rights to the Amelia Island Concours and has christened it The Amelia. The Amelia has a featured honoree each year, and 2024’s is Rick Hendrick, 14-time NASCAR champion and owner of Hendrick Automotive Group. The event kicks off with a wine dinner on Thursday the 29th, but the actual concours itself is on March 3 and is a ticket-only event.

The Amelia’s comprehensive website covers the plethora of events they host including special dinners, driving experiences and more. We encourage you to check out the full schedule here.

Throughout the year RADwood holds a number of regional shows in the United States highlighting more modern cars dating from 1980-1999. 2021 marks the first year RADwood will be at The Amelia, which is no surprise as Hagerty also purchased this event in 2022. Speaking from experience, RADwood is a great show for fans of youngtimer cars and its casual 80s vibe is a terrific compliment to the more refined concours events. A ticket runs $45 but also includes Cars and Community.

This is Amelia Island’s Cars and Coffee event and while it was formerly a free event to the community, is now a ticketed event under Hagerty’s ownership. A car show before the concours, Cars and Caffeine takes place on Saturday March 2d at the same location as RADwood and features hundreds of different makes and models. If you’re not interested in paying the big bucks for an Amelia ticket, you can save some cash and still see some amazing cars here. This show is bundled with a RADwood ticket.

Consider this an anti-Amelia event. Concours d Lemons is all about celebrating cars that no one loves, or shouldn’t. It’s a ton of fun with “worst of show” awards and more. It’s only $20 for admission and takes place on Friday, March 1.

A segment of the amazing concours entrants attending for the weekend embark on a tour of the island, stopping at a public display until 2PM in downtown Fernandina Beach. This is a completely free exhibition and a great way to see some cool cars for just the cost of lunch.

The Porsche Club of America holds its own marque-specific car show at The Amelia River club. Here you can see a vast number of Porsches including rare race cars, customs, and pristine concours examples. While hosted by the club, the event is open to non-Porsche owners. The parking fee of $40 covers your entry as a spectator. We’ll be there, so say hi if you see us!

The list above is in no way comprehensive, and many smaller clubs like the Lotus Club or Morgan Club will have their own events during Amelia Concours Week. We encourage you to check the club websites of your favorite marques.

Auctions | Amelia Island Concours Week

The prestige of The Amelia concours attracts some of the most exclusive collector cars in the world to a series of high-end auctions that take place prior to the car show weekend. If you’re looking for a special car, chances are one is crossing the block this week. Auction previews can be mini car shows on their own, so we’ve highlighted the major auctions that will be at Amelia for you below. As we’ll be working these events, maybe we’ll see you there!

For those looking for the RM Sotheby’s auction that used to take place at the Ritz Carlton, it’s been replaced by Broad Arrow’s event as a result of Hagerty’s purchase of The Amelia. RM Sotheby’s is holding its Florida auction in Miami the same weekend during its counter-event, MODAMIAMI. We hope to check this one out in 2025.

Things to Do on Amelia Island

If you (well, your travel companions) need a break from all the car craziness, here are some great non-car related activities you can enjoy during car week.

If you’re a fan of these illuminated navigational aids from the past, Amelia Island’s lighthouse is worth a stop. Tours are available for $10/adult, but you can visit the grounds for free.

A Civil-War era fort plus nature trails and some nice beaches, Fort Clinch is worth a visit. Entry fee is $6 per vehicle.

A very quaint little waterfront town with shops, dining, and lots of cool Victornian architecture.  The town is bustling during Amelia Island Concours Week, so plan early.

While March at Amelia Island can be chilly and sometimes rainy, a warm spell isn’t out of the question. This centrally located beach park is a great way to sample Florida’s beaches.

At the southern tip of Amelia Island, this park offers beautiful beaches and coastal forests. $2pp entry fee.

I know it seems weird, but the site dates to Spanish conquest days and is a fascinating place to explore some ancient history among trees dripping with Spanish moss.

Tips and Tricks

Where to Stay: Hotels and More

The Ritz is the host hotel for The Amelia and subsequently books up immediately. If you didn’t make a reservation the day the dates for the event were announced, you’re out of luck. But it’s central to everything if you can get in, and you can visit the property during events.

An oceanfront resort with a ton of rooms. If you’ve missed your chance for the Ritz Carlton, this could be an alternative. While not as luxurious as the Ritz, it has full resort amenities and is a great place for families.

Room share sites offer an alternative to the big chains and can also be a bargain if you book early enough. Don’t feel like you have to stay with a big resort. Sometimes you may even find a beachfront home for rent!

About a 50 minute drive from Fernandina Beach, Jacksonville is a major city in Florida with a plethora of hotels. If you’re up for the daily commute, it can be a good alternative.

Like hotels, campgrounds in the area fill up fast and are reservation only. Book early!

Parking

It’s a nightmare during concours week, so be prepared for frustration. For The Amelia, parking is at the airport with transfer to the event via shuttle buses. Parking is $20/car/day. Street and lot parking in Fernandina Beach is possible, but a battle. Make sure you bring lots of 10 and 20 dollar bills for parking fees. It’ll make your life easier.

Near the Ritz, lots of folks will park for free along some of the main roads. Look for the line of cars and people walking toward the venues. Depending on when you arrive, you may have a hike ahead of you.

Some auctions and events (like Gooding & Company and Werks Reunion) will have their own parking fees and locations, so check their websites beforehand.

Getting Around

Most people bring their own cars and park in one of the event lots or seek street parking. Even with a car, you’ll find yourself walking for many miles over the course of the week, so bring comfortable walking shoes.

We recommend a backpack or other tote to carry supplies in, like sunblock, bug spray, an extra jacket, snacks, etc. Don’t overdo it, but it’s better to be prepared than have to hoof it back to your hotel.

Dining

Make reservations early! Fernandina Beach is packed with visitors during Amelia Island Concours Week and restaurants book up fast. Alternatively, dine at establishments that do not offer reservations or visit one of the local grocery stores to prepare your own meals.

Amelia is a social event, so you’ll find lots of folks hanging out in local watering holes talking cars throughout the week. If you’re not shy, stop in and make some new friends.

We’re looking forward to our first visit to Amelia Island Concours Week since we last attended in 2021 and are excited to see the changes amidst a very different car market. Hopefully, our days will be filled with focused work on behalf of our clients, sprinkled with a little fun that we can bring back and share. If you’re heading down to Florida, let us know! We’d love to meet you.
